The Greatest Gift of All

It is tough for me, who really likes to sleep, to understand that people got up early to stand in line as stores opened at 3AM last Friday! There were bargains there, I am told, and being able to save money on Christmas gifts was worth the sleep deprivation. And then came Cyber Monday, where the internet had their biggest shopping day in years, and gifts were purchased for early delivery---in time for Christmas.

Don’t misunderstand, I like to give and receive gifts as well as anyone out there, but after the excitement of the gift-giving, after the wrapping paper is discarded and the newness of the gift disappears, we often are left with sort of an empty feeling. So what, then, is a great gift we can all give that will be lasting and renewable as time goes by? Consider this. Each of us has within us some pretty amazing qualities and talents. Scripturally, we think of these as spiritual gifts. God has endowed us with them, and they are to be used to help others. Oh, yes, sometimes they are stuck away in our mind’s closet, have gathered dust and have not been used for some time. Let’s check them out and use them as permanent gifts to our loved ones.

One gift that I have in mind is the ability of ours to bring joy into another’s life. This life is tough, full of problems, full of stress and can at times not be very pleasant. Do you know people like that? I do. Maybe you are that type of person. Wouldn’t it be nice if you and I could develop strategies to bring a sense of joy into those lives? Unlock your gifts, look at available resources and begin to look at life in a more positive manner. If you know the Lord, you can draw on the Holy Spirit to provide you with the fruit of the Spirit. That is found in Galatians 5:22 and it includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Let me suggest that if we can show this fruit through our lives to other people, then we will provide what I consider the greatest Christmas gift of all. It is one that not only will keep giving to others, but it will return to the giver manifold.

It is especially important to share this wonderful gift within our families. We have had a lot of people asking for help in their marriage, in dealing with their children and in dealing with their workplace. I truly believe if we give of ourselves, this gift in this manner, we will have a whole lot less stress and problems. Truly giving to each other in this way can solve myriad problems. Love, joy and peace have a great tendency to return to the giver. As John said in his 3rd epistle, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”
